Savings indicators

IndicatorDescription
Potential savingsThe estimated amount of potential monthly savings in licensing costs if all Eligible resources are converted to BYOL.
Realized savingsThe estimated amount you save in a month on licensing costs from resources that are BYOL-configured.
BYOL coverage
  • Coverage rate: The percentage of eligible resources that use a BYOL licensing model. Resources with a License status of Not applicable are excluded from this value.
  • BYOL: The number of BYOL-configured resources.
  • Eligible: The number of resources eligible to be converted to a BYOL licensing model.

Licenses indicators

These indicators are supported by licensing data from SAM on Snow Atlas.

Available core licenses from SAM on Snow AtlasThe total number of available core licenses that are applicable for BYOL. This total includes unassigned Standard Edition licenses, and Datacenter Edition licenses that allow simultaneous usage in Azure and on-premises. For more information on license use rights, see Use rights .
Core license shortfall/excessThis indicator will have one of the following labels depending on your rate of coverage:
  • Core license shortall: You do not have the required number of core licenses for your resources with a BYOL license status. Additional licenses must be acquired, or you must disable BYOL resources to eliminate the deficit.
  • Core license excess: You have complete license coverage for your resources with a BYOL license status, and additional licenses that can be applied to Eligible resources.
BYOL license status
  • Required: The total number of core licenses required for your resources with a BYOL license status.
  • Available: The total number of available core licenses that are applicable for BYOL. This total includes unassigned Standard Edition licenses, and Datacenter Edition licenses that allow simultaneous usage on-premises and in Azure. For more information on license use rights, see Use rights .
  • Shortfall: This value is only represented in the chart if you do not have the required number of core licenses for your resources with a BYOL license status.

Resource table

ColumnDescription
Resource nameThe user-created name of the resource.
Resource typeThe type of resource. This can be a virtual machine or a uniform scale set.
InstancesThe number of instances associated with the resource. For a uniform scale set, this value indicates how many virtual machines belong to the scale set.
Operating systemThe operating system used by the resource.
Instance typeThe instance type used by the resource.
An instance type is a pre-configured combination of CPU and memory designed to accommodate different user needs.
PriorityThe priority of the resource. For example, standard or spot.
vCPUThe number of vCPUs assigned to the resource. This column will be blank for resources that are Not Applicable, or when the vCPU count cannot be calculated.
For instances with constrained vCPU, this column reflects the total vCPU count, which includes both active and disabled vCPUs. This is because disabled vCPUs still require a Windows Server license. For more information on constrained vCPU, see Constrained vCPU sizes for database workloads .
Licenses requiredThe number of Windows Server licenses required for the resource to qualify for Azure Hybrid Benefit. The following rules apply:
  • Each instance must have a minimum of eight core licenses, even if the instance has fewer than eight cores.
  • The number of licenses required is equivalent to the core size of the instance. For example, an instance with 12 cores requires 12 core licenses.
  • For instances with constrained vCPU, the number of core licenses required is equivalent to the total vCPU count, which includes both active and disabled vCPUs. This is because disabled vCPUs still require a Windows Server license.

Savings (USD)The estimated monthly amount you save in licensing costs with BYOL. This column will display a Realized savings value for resources that have already migrated to BYOL. A Potential savings value will dislay for BYOL-eligible resources.
Image SKUThe identifier used by the cloud provider to differentiate between image configurations.
An image is a pre-configured virtual hard disk that contains the operating system, software, and data required to create a new instance of the resource.
TenancyLists if the resource is shared among multiple tenants or dedicated to a single tenant in the cloud platform.
Subscription nameThe name of the subscription account that contains the resource.
Date created (UTC)The date and time the resource was created in UTC.
Image IDThe identifier assigned to the specific image instance.
An image is a pre-configured virtual hard disk that contains the operating system, software, and data required to create a new instance of the resource.
Resource groupThe logical container the resource is grouped within in the cloud providers' portal.
Resource IDThe unique identifier assigned to the resource by the cloud provider.
BYOL typeThe type of BYOL (bring-your-own-license) model used to manage the resource's license.
If the resource is not already BYOL-configured, this column will be empty.
Cloud providerThe cloud provider that hosts the resource.
RegionThe geographical location where the resource is hosted.
Subscription IDThe unique identifier of the subscription account where the resource resides.
HostThe name of the Dedicated Host the resource is assigned to.
If the resource is not assigned to a host, this column will be blank.
License statusThe license status of the resource's operating system.
  • BYOL: The resource is BYOL-configured.
  • Eligible: The resource is not BYOL-configured, but is eligible for conversion.
  • Not applicable: The resource resides in a Dev/Test subscription in Azure, and there are no additional licensing costs for the Windows Server operating system.
