Manage Windows VDA licensing

Learn how to manage Windows Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) licensing in SAM Core on Snow Atlas.

Every device that connects to a Windows Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) will require virtual desktop access rights. If the accessing device is a computer covered by a Windows license with valid Software Assurance, the virtual desktop access rights are included. For other devices, a Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) license is required instead.

To manage Windows VDA licensing, do the following:

  1. Check if your Windows licenses with Software Assurance are registered with upgrade rights.

  2. If you find Windows licenses that are covered by valid Software Assurance but are registered without upgrade rights, enable the upgrade rights accordingly.

  3. Register your Windows Virtual Desktop Access licenses.

View upgrade rights

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find and select the license you want to view upgrade rights for. For information on how to filter, sort, and group the list of licenses, see Manage lists.

  3. On the Maintenance and support tab, view the registered Upgrade rights for the license:

    • Upgrade rights = Yes

The Windows license is registered with Software Assurance for the period specified in Period from and Period to.

    • Upgrade rights = No

The Windows license is registered without Software Assurance.

  4. If the license is covered by valid Software Assurance, but is still registered without upgrade rights, correct this by enabling the upgrade rights. For more information, see Enable upgrade rights.

Enable upgrade rights

  1. On the SAM Core menu, select Licenses.

  2. Find and select the license you want to enable upgrade rights for. For information on how to filter, sort, and group the list of licenses, see Manage lists.

  3. Select Edit license.

  4. On the Maintenance and support tab, enable upgrade rights according to the valid Software Assurance. For more information and field descriptions, see Maintenance and support.

  5. Select Save.
