Windows Server: Reference
Refer to the information below for descriptions of indicators and table columns on the Windows Server page.
Savings indicators
Indicator | Description |
---|---|
Potential savings | The estimated amount of potential monthly savings in licensing costs if all Eligible resources are converted to BYOL. |
Realized savings | The estimated amount you save in a month on licensing costs from resources that are BYOL-configured. |
BYOL coverage |

Licenses indicators
These indicators are supported by licensing data from SAM on Snow Atlas.
Indicator | Description |
---|---|
Available core licenses from SAM on Snow Atlas | The total number of available core licenses that are applicable for BYOL. This total includes unassigned Standard Edition licenses, and Datacenter Edition licenses that allow simultaneous usage in Azure and on-premises. For more information on license use rights, see Use rights . |
Core license shortfall/excess | This indicator will have one of the following labels depending on your rate of coverage:
|
BYOL license status |

Resource table
Column | Description |
---|---|
Resource name | The user-created name of the resource. |
Resource type | The type of resource. This can be a virtual machine or a uniform scale set. Tip: If you select the name of a single resource from the resources tables, an information panel will display the license requirements for the resource and its current Azure Hybrid Benefit license status; it will also display a detailed summary of the resource. |
Power state | The power state of the Windows Server resource. Power states affect license requirements and costs. The power state can be:
|
Instances | The number of instances associated with the resource. For a uniform scale set, this value indicates how many virtual machines belong to the scale set. |
Operating system | The operating system used by the resource. |
Instance type | The instance type used by the resource. An instance type is a pre-configured combination of CPU and memory designed to accommodate different user needs. |
Priority | The priority of the resource. For example, standard or spot. |
vCPU | The number of vCPUs assigned to the resource. This column will be blank for resources that are Not Applicable, or when the vCPU count cannot be calculated. For instances with constrained vCPU, this column reflects the total vCPU count, which includes both active and disabled vCPUs. This is because disabled vCPUs still require a Windows Server license. For more information on constrained vCPU, see Constrained vCPU sizes for database workloads . |
Licenses required | The number of Windows Server licenses required for the resource to qualify for Azure Hybrid Benefit. The following rules apply:
|
Savings (USD) | The estimated monthly amount you save in licensing costs with BYOL. This column will display a Realized savings value for resources that have already migrated to BYOL. A Potential savings value will dislay for BYOL-eligible resources. |
Image SKU | The identifier used by the cloud provider to differentiate between image configurations. An image is a pre-configured virtual hard disk that contains the operating system, software, and data required to create a new instance of the resource. |
Tenancy | Lists if the resource is shared among multiple tenants or dedicated to a single tenant in the cloud platform. |
Subscription name | The name of the subscription account that contains the resource. |
Date created (UTC) | The date and time the resource was created in UTC. |
Image ID | The identifier assigned to the specific image instance. An image is a pre-configured virtual hard disk that contains the operating system, software, and data required to create a new instance of the resource. |
Resource group | The logical container the resource is grouped within in the cloud provider's portal. |
Resource ID | The unique identifier assigned to the resource by the cloud provider. |
BYOL type | The type of BYOL (bring-your-own-license) model used to manage the resource's license. If the resource is not already BYOL-configured, this column will be empty. |
Cloud provider | The cloud provider that hosts the resource. |
Region | The geographical location where the resource is hosted. |
Subscription ID | The unique identifier of the subscription account where the resource resides. |
Host | The name of the Dedicated Host the resource is assigned to. If the resource is not assigned to a host, this column will be blank. |
License status | The license status of the resource's operating system.
